Elevate: Boosting Women in STEM Scholarships

Applications are open for the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering's Elevate: Boosting Women in STEM program. The program will award up to 500 undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) over six years. In addition to providing financial support, the program aims to address gender inequities in STEM through fostering more women-led industry-academia collaborations in applied research and business, growing professional skills of women in STEM and by propelling women into leadership.
To be eligible, an applicant must identify as a woman or non-binary person, be enrolling as a domestic student and be planning to undertake a STEM degree or higher studies to improve business acumen at an Australian university, commencing in 2024
ATSE particularly encourages applications from individuals who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; individuals from regional, rural or remote areas; LGBTQIA+; individuals from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds; low-socioeconomic backgrounds; or those living with a disability. Diversity, inclusion, and achievement relative to opportunity will be considered in the assessment and selection process.

The Hatchery’s Public Sector Women in STEM Leadership Summit is a platform for women at all stages of leadership to come together and share their insights on how they made it work, how they changed attitudes and created their own leadership style to effectively lead in male dominated fields.
This is a great opportunity for women in senior leadership to share their learnings and advice for the next crop of women leaders in the space, some of whom may be struggling to find role models in what is typically a heavily male dominated field.

Opportunity for current Year 11 students
The NYSF Year 12 Program is a digital and in-person program that gives students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in STEM.
In 2023, the NYSF Year 12 Program will run from 10 to 24 January. Students will have opportunities to:
- participate in tours of science and technology facilities, and learn about cutting edge research;
- engage with industry partners and research providers;
- learn about university and STEM career pathways;
- mix with other like-minded students from all over Australia; and
- network with former NYSF participants to further increase understanding of STEM related study and career experiences.
In 2022, 43% of participants lived in remote and regional areas and 65% of participants identified as female.

Women in Data Science (WiDS) Hobart 2022

Women in Data Science (WiDS) Hobart 2022 is an independent event organised by Lisa Craw and Denisse Fierro Arcos, PhD students at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). WiDS Hobart coincides with the annual global WiDS Conference held at Stanford University and an estimated 150+ locations worldwide. All genders are invite to attend WiDS regional events, which feature outstanding women doing outstanding work.
Through WiDS Hobart 2022 we aim to inspire participants about data science and its applications, by getting an insight into the careers and experience of women in the field. We also aim to support women in data science locally and nationally by highlighting their amazing work.
WiDS Hobart 2022 will feature a discussion panel centered around the question: "How has your career journey been so far?". Our panelists will share their experiences, opportunities, and hurdles they have encountered along the way. This will be followed by a moderated Q&A session where members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Our panelists include:

- Dr. Paola Petrelli, Data Manager at the Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes (CLEX)

Independent Director – NCI Advisory Board

NCI Australia is one of the nation’s leading high-performance computing facilities, as well as one of Australia’s largest research data repositories and home of its most integrated data services. NCI Australia provides these world-class services to Australian science, government and industry, thereby enabling nationally significant research projects that couldn’t otherwise be undertaken.
The ideal candidates for the roles of independent director will:
- be prepared to commit to the strategic vision of NCI Australia,
- have experience in leadership, strategic planning and high-level decision making, and
- have knowledge of the digital economy, big data and data technologies.
Experience in genomics and related big data informatics, or a background and expertise in high performance computing and associated big data needs of academia would be highly regarded.
Meetings are generally held four times a year in Canberra with travel expenses and a Directors fee of $1066 per meeting based on the daily rate derived from the Remuneration Tribunal (Remuneration and Allowances for Holders of Part-time Public Office) Determination for the Australian Medical Research Advisory Board, effective April 2021. Meeting participation may be by videoconference as appropriate under any applicable state or territory COVID-19 arrangements.

PhD opportunity in OPTIMA
The Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre in Optimisation Technologies, Integrated Methodologies, and Applications (OPTIMA) is seeking applications for ten ARC fully-funded PhD projects with generous top-up scholarships.
We're looking for talented students with a background in mathematics, computer science, statistics, economics, engineering or other related fields. These positions are offered across OPTIMA's nodes located at Monash University, Clayton or The University of Melbourne, Parkville. Projects will be available from June 2021 onwards.
PhD projects are 3.5 years, including at least a one-year equivalent industry placement, the timing of which can be negotiated.
An expression of interest must be submitted before prospective PhD students are invited to apply for admission through their selected university. Before applying, please read the OPTIMA node universities' admission requirements, as a PhD will not be offered if you do not meet them.
