Biography

My main project is focused on non-photosynthetic Cyanobacteria. I'm interested in where they are found, how they function and their evolution. I also study marsupial microbiomes and how the microbes in the marsupial gut are able to break down their food.

I am passionate about providing women in science (especially EMCRs) with equal opportunities, science outreach and mentoring. I was a UQ Women Create Change Ambassador for the SAGE Pilot of Athena SWAN, I've presented on the koala microbiome on SCOPE TV and I gave a specialist lecture for the National Youth Science Forum on my career path. I'm the chairperson of the SCMB EMCR working group, a member of the Faculty of Science EMCR Committee and a member of the International Society for Microbial Ecology EMCR committee. Within these committees I'm enthusiastic about organising events that bring EMCRs from different disciplines together to share ideas. At present myself and others are establishing a mentoring scheme set up for EMCRs within our school.
