Mary is highly regarded in the wine and agribusiness sectors and is focused on building resilience, profitability and regenerative practices into production systems, by finding tailored, practical and timely solutions.
As an experienced board director, agricultural scientist and third-generation viticulturist, Mary brings a wide range of skills and experience from practical, research, extension and consultancy roles both within Australia and overseas. These skills have been gathered over the past 25 years, along with a PhD in Viticulture and Plant Protection, and associated tertiary qualifications in Conservation and Park Management, Natural Resource Management, Education, and Arbitration.
As the Managing Director of Retallack Viticulture Pty Ltd, Mary offers a broad range of viticultural consulting services throughout Australia. She is also a Director of Wine Australia, the Primary Industries Educational Foundation Australia (PIEFA), a member of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) Viticulture Commission, (ENVIRO and PROTEC groups), Food Agility CRC Strategic Investment Council, AgriFutures™ Rural Women’s Award Alumni Advisory Panel, The Australian and New Zealand Grapegrower and Winemaker Journal editorial panel, and the Adelaide University Wine Alumni Steering Group.
Mary’s leadership capabilities, contribution to STEM and excellence in science have been acknowledged via the AgriFutures Australia Rural Woman of the Year award (SA and National winner), as an inductee on Emerald Grain’s list of 100 Women in Australian Agribusiness, an inductee in the Businesswomen’s Hall of Fame, Food and Beverage Development Fund scholarship recipient, Women in Innovation finalist, and as a participant in the National Farmers’ Federation inaugural Diversity in Agriculture Leadership program. Mary is also an ambassador for PIRSA’s ‘Women Influencing Agribusiness and Regions’ strategy and ‘Great Wine Capitals Knowledge Exchange’. She lives on a small apple orchard in the Adelaide Hills.
