Biography

Dr Anu Chacko is an early career research leader in the Clem Jones Centre for Neurobiology and Stem Cell Research (Led by mentors A/Prof Ekberg and Prof St John) at Griffith University. She is a neuro/microbiologist who has made paradigm-shifting breakthroughs in determining (1) how glial cells (neural immune cells) combat infections and (2) how certain pathogens can enter the brain and cause damage. She now focuses on treatment: finding compounds that can stimulate glial cells to both remove bacteria and promote regeneration. With her mentors Ekberg/St John, she has established several national/international collaborations to increase diversity and impact. She is chief investigator on competitive research grants of more than $ 5.5 million. In addition to her research contribution, she has extensive experience in supervision of students and mentoring of junior staff members within the team. She also actively promotes scientific awareness through community engagement events.
