Dr Nina Pollak is a CSIRO Synthetic Biology Future Science Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC Australia). She aims to combine synthetic biology with 3D bio-printing to artificially construct a mobile “pseudo-organism” for detoxifying waterways. Nina obtained her expertise in cardiac biology and biochemistry through a PhD from the University of Graz (Austria) in 2014. Her 12 publications include high impact journals Nature Medicine and Circulation Research, with 3 first-author publications featured in journal editorials, and research highlighted in popular media outlets such as Cosmos Magazine and New Scientist. Nina has also played a major role in starting an Early Career Researcher network at USC, and her contributions to graduate and undergraduate teaching were recognized in 2017 through a University of Queensland teaching award. Her collective efforts seek to grow synthetic biology capability in Australia and inspire a next generation of synthetic biologists.
